Board of Education

William "Bill” Callanan
Term Expires: 6/30/2020

William Callanan is a Stillwater High School graduate. Following his time at Stillwater, Callanan went to Norwich University where he studied physical education. He is currently the assistant superintendent of the terminal of a major petroleum company, Global Companies, LLC.

In the Stillwater community, Callanan has served as the head coach of the junior level Battle Football team, a board member for Battle Football and Cheerleading and an assistant coach for Mechanicville-Stillwater Little League.

"As a lifelong resident, it is my honor and privilege to serve on the Stillwater Board of Education," Callanan said. "It is my hope that I can help continue to guide Stillwater to be the best it can be for our children, employees, and community at large. I am pleased with what Stillwater has to offer, but I know that we can always do more and improve. While working with a great team of people, I hope to guide the district in the path of our vision for the future."

Callanan and his wife Renee, a sixth grade teacher in the district, have two children, Aidan and Madelyn.

David Giso
Term Expires: 6/30/2020

David Giso was elected to the Board of Education in May 2017. He has lived in the Stillwater Central School District for more than 15 years.

Giso is currently an executive director for Change Healthcare. He is a graduate of Colonie Central High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Siena College.

In the community, Giso is involved with Mechanicville Stillwater Little League, Stillwater Battle Football, MSUSC Soccer League, MSYSL Soccer League, SACC Basketball, Stillwater PTA, Friends of Saratoga Glen Park, and the Stillwater Library.

"I believe that growing and advancing our community starts with our children," Giso said. "Nurturing their strengths whether they be athletics, academics or the arts, each child brings a special uniqueness to our community and should be celebrated. A diverse population is essential to sustaining our community and attracting others to join us."

Giso and his wife Ingrid have two sons, David and Carlo.

Kristina Greene
Term Expires: 6/30/2019

A life-long resident and graduate of Stillwater, Kristin Greene is in her second year of serving on the Board of Education.

Greene received an Early Childhood Degree from Maria College in Albany, a Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY Plattsburgh in Education, and a Master’s Degree from SUNY Albany in Specialized Reading. Greene is a kindergarten teacher in the Ballston Spa School District.

Greene is an active member of several committees and participates in community activities at Gordon Creek Elementary School. She is a member of the Stillwater Basketball and Baseball Booster Clubs and support the Stillwater Football Booster Club. Greene volunteers for many events associated with the PTA, clubs that directly impact our athletes at Stillwater, as well as events that support the Sophomore Class.

"I decided to run for the Stillwater Board of Education after being encouraged by many community members," Greene said. "After thoughtful consideration, I decided that I could bring the knowledge and experience needed to be an effective board member. I am very proud to be a Stillwater graduate and I am quite pleased with the education my son has received here as well. He has been educated, coached and guided by truly amazing administrators, teachers and staff. I also understand the importance of being a fiscally responsible board member and I understand that I am on the board to represent all stakeholders."

Greene and her husband Joe have one son, Ryan.

Timothy Hems, PRESIDENT
Term expires: 6/30/2018

Stillwater Board of Education President Timothy Hems has lived in Stillwater since 1997.

Hems graduated Hudson Valley Community College with an associate's degree in machine processes. He is currently employed at Knolls Atomic Power Lab in Niskayuna as a senior mechanical designer, where he designs equipment for submarines and air craft carriers for the United States Navy.

In the Stillwater community, Hems was involved with coaching for Stillwater Community Kids. He also served on the Stillwater Battle board for two years.

"I humbly serve the community of Stillwater, taxpayers, community members, parents, staff and children of the district to help ensure a fair and appropriate education for ALL of our children," Hems said. "I am proud to say our district also offers numerous opportunities in sports, extra-curricular activities and clubs and performing arts, while preparing our children for life after high school, regardless of their chosen path."

Hems and his wife Colleen, also a  lifelong Stillwater resident, have three children, Morgan, Maddy, and Max.

Valerie Masterson, VICE PRESIDENT
Term Expires: 6/30/2019

Valerie Masterson has served on the Stillwater Board of Education for 23 years.

She is a graduate of Hoosic Valley High School and Hudson Valley Community College, where she studied business. Masterson is currently employed by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an administrative specialist.

Masterson has served as PTA president, vice president and secretary. She has also been involved in numerous Board of Education committees, as well the SCSD website committee, capital project committee, and an Odyssey of the Mind coach. In the community, Masterson serves as a deacon and trustee at the Stillwater United Church.

"I serve on the Stillwater Board of Education because it is something that I enjoy," Masterson said. "However, it can be challenging to do the research on educational and financial issues. Sometimes there are difficult questions that need to be asked and problems that need to be solved. I believe that if we all work together we can accomplish a lot."

Masterson has three children, Michael, Meaghan, and Matthew.

Brian McNeil
Term Expires: 6/30/2020

Brian McNeil is a lifelong resident of Stillwater.

Throughout his youth, McNeil was engaged in school functions and was a member of the Stillwater football team. He is a graduate of St. John Fisher College with a bachelor's degree in Sociology. McNeil is currently employed by Wine and Spirits of Slingerlands.

Dedicated to serving the community, McNeil served on the Stillwater Area Community Center Board of Directors and the Stillwater Battle Football board. He continuously serves as a volunteer coach in both community basketball and football. McNeil is also an active member of the Stillwater PTA.

"My goal is to work towards creating a strong connection between school and community,” McNeil said. "I know that students come first and it is our job to provide the resources and knowledge to move students towards a successful future."

McNeil is in his fourth year of serving on the board of education. He and his wife Christy have two children, Brian and CJ.

Jon Mueller
Term expires: 6/30/2018

Jon Mueller has lived in Stillwater for 40 years.

He is a graduate of Stillwater High School and Eckerd College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in sociology, and the College of Saint Rose, where he received a master’s degree in secondary education. Mueller currently serves as the head baseball coach at University at Albany, where he has been for 20 years.

In the community, Mueller has been a volunteer Battle Football coach for seven years. He has also been involved with youth soccer, Halfmoon Youth Baseball, and Stillwater Girls Varity Basketball.

"My goal is to enrich the experience of our students through a fiscally responsible plan for our district."

Mueller is in his second year of serving on the board of education. He and his wife Patricia have two children, Marley and Jaxon.

Michael Toleman
Term expires: 6/30/2018

Michael Toleman is retired from both the United States Army and the Department of Corrections. He volunteers his time coaching youth basketball and youth softball.

He resides in Stillwater with his wife Rebecca and their two children, Logan and Bella.

Shay Valigorsky
Term Expires: 6/30/2019

Shay Valigorsky, a lifelong resident and graduate of Stillwater, has served on the Board of Education since July 2017.

Valigorsky received a bachelor’s degree in theatre from University at Albany. She is currently employed by Capital District Psychiatric Center and works in the human resources office where she administer benefits, on boards new employees, processes retirement, and supervise payroll processes, workers’ compensation and appraisal process.

Valigorsky co-created a Facebook support group called Parents Unlocking Potential. Their mission is "to be a resource to parents of children of all ages who receive special education supports services and/or IEPs and 504 plans."

At Stillwater, Valigorsky was previously involved with the PTA and the Stillwater Players. She is also a former employee of the Stillwater Area Community Center.

"I serve on the Board of Education because I want to be able to support our children in getting the best educational experience possible in order to prepare them to be contributing members of society," Valigorsky said. "I also want to support our teachers and administrators and ensure that they have access to opportunities to grow as educators."

Valigorsky has two children, Simon and Amelia.
