Dispensing of Medication

State law requires all drugs—prescription and non-prescription—be administered by the school nurse. Parents must bring any medication to school in its original container, which should be properly labeled, with a written note from the parent/guardian and the order from the doctor. Students are not permitted to bring medication into school. Students in grades 6-12 may carry inhalers with them and use the medication independently, however, we still require by law the parent/guardian note and the order from the doctor stating that the child may self-medicate. Elementary students must still report to the nurses office for inhalers.


Beginning July 1, 2018, all New York State public school students must have a health exam when they enter school as a new entrant and in Pre-K or Kindergarten and grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. These examinations must be completed on the approved NYSED Student Health Examination Form for School for the health exam. In addition to the physical exam, dental certificates are now required for all new entrants and students entering kindergarten and grades 2, 4, 7, 10. If your child has had a recent physical by his/her own physician, please send in documentation. Any student requiring a physical exam and who has not filed their physical form with the health office will be seen for a physical with the school physician, Dr. Stephen Sgambati Jr., early in the school year.

Required Immunizations

All students enrolled in New York State schools grades K-12 must provide proof of immunizations. See a list of required immunizations

Vision, Hearing & Scoliosis Screenings

  • Vision screening: Is provided for students who are new to the district, and in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10.
  • Hearing screening: Is provided for students who are new to the district and in grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10.
  • Scoliosis: Is screened for in those in grades 5-9. Referrals are made in accordance with screening results.

Body Mass Index Reporting

As part of a required health examination, a student is weighed and his/her height is measured. These numbers are used to figure out the student’s body mass index or “BMI.” The BMI helps the doctor or nurse know if the student’s weight is in a healthy range. New York State Education Law requires that BMI and weight status group be indicated as part of the student’s school health examination. This information is reported to the New York State Department of Health. No names and no information about about individual students are sent. However, you may choose to have your child’s information excluded from this survey report. You must submit this request in writing to the health office.
