School Board Recognition Week is Oct. 12-16

A group of students in caps and gowns posing together for a photo, with text that reads "SUPPORTING THE SUCCESS OF ALL STUDENTS THANK YOU SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS! School Board Recognition Week Oct. 12-16, 2026." The Stillwater "S" logo in maroon is in the lower right corner.

The New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) recognizes Oct. 12-16 as School Board Recognition Week. The week highlights the integral role school boards play in building a stronger future for our schools and students through their leadership and service. School board members help establish the standards and practices that foster lifelong learning and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.

The Stillwater Central School District Board of Education consists of nine members elected by district residents. Board members volunteer their time to enrich the educational experience at SCSD and do not receive compensation for their service. The Board works to fulfill the district’s mission by setting long-term goals and providing guidance on a range of topics, including policy, curriculum, goal-setting and fiscal management. The Board’s primary responsibility is to support student success, and its decisions reflect that commitment.

“Strong schools are the foundation of strong communities, and these dedicated public servants give their time, energy and expertise to ensure our schools provide a high-quality educational experience for every student,” said Superintendent of Schools Joseph Mariano, Jr. “They make tough decisions each month and spend countless hours studying education issues and regulations to uphold the accountability our community expects.”

According to Superintendent Mariano, the core work of the school board is to promote student achievement by developing a shared vision and goals for the district while ensuring strategies, resources, policies and programs align with those goals. Using data to track student achievement keeps the district focused on its progress, maintains public accountability and creates opportunities for continuous improvement. Additionally, fostering a positive school climate creates learning environments where all students can thrive.

“School board members are the voice of Stillwater residents in educational decision-making. While we make a special effort to recognize their hard work and show our appreciation this week, their service is a year-round commitment,” Superintendent Mariano said.

Thank you to the SCSD Board of Education for the valuable work its members do each day and their commitment to providing individualized, exceptional experiences for all students:
