Seven Stillwater High School seniors put pen to paper Thursday, May 7, 2026, signing letters of intent to play their sports at the collegiate level. Gathered in the Lilac Lobby with family, friends, students, staff and coaches in attendance, the event marked the next step for the student-athletes as they committed to competing in college while pursuing their academic and athletic goals.
“Soccer is a sport I love, and it has been a long-term goal of mine to play in college,” said senior Sadie Hazen, who will attend SUNY Canton in the fall to play soccer and study graphic and multimedia design.
Fellow senior Katie Coogan, currently in her final softball season at Stillwater High School, will continue playing at St. Lawrence University, where she will major in biology.
“I couldn’t imagine giving up a sport that has been such a huge part of my life,” Coogan said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to compete at a higher level while continuing my education.”
Senior Eziyon Medina will compete in track and field at the University of New Haven, where he plans to study international business after narrowing his choices to that school and Albany State University in Georgia. He said he chose the University of New Haven after “discovering how amazing the campus is and how strong the programs are in teaching and helping people.”
“People say it feels like home, and I think I’d be a great fit,” Medina said. “It’ll be a great place to start my life and career.”
Senior Abigail Mack is unique among the student-athletes in that her sport, gymnastics, is not offered at Stillwater High School. A competitive gymnast since she was 7 years old, Mack trained at Cartwheels Gymnastics Center before switching to World Class Gymnastics Academy her freshman year of high school, where she has competed ever since. She plans to continue gymnastics at Utica University in the fall while studying physical education.
“I chose to continue gymnastics at Utica University because it gives me the opportunity to keep growing in a sport I love while performing at a higher level and being part of a close-knit environment,” Mack said. “Since gymnastics is not offered at Stillwater High School, competing in college will be a very different experience because I will finally be able to train and compete as part of an official school team.”
When it comes to balancing academics with the demands of collegiate-level sports, Coogan said she expects it to be “more competitive and demanding” than high school, especially while studying biology, but she “knows the experience will help me grow both as a player and a person.”
Hazen agreed that playing at a higher level will be different from high school, in addition to adjusting to college life. “But I’m excited and ready for the challenges and experiences that come with playing at SUNY Canton,” she said.
