Stillwater Winter Sports Update

Due to COVID-19, lack of facilities, transportation and schedules across the Wasaren League, Stillwater will be offering varsity and potentially JV sports for the winter season. The season is set to begin on Jan. 4 and run through Feb. 28.

The varsity (and potentially JV) low/medium risk sports that are cleared for competition beginning Monday, Jan. 4 include: varsity boys bowling, varsity boys alpine skiing and varsity girls alpine skiing. Sign ups through FamilyID will begin on Monday, Dec. 14.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s decision to postpone all high-risk sports until authorization is granted was reinforced by the increase in infection and hospitalization rates across the state. The New York State Department of Health has determined the following NYSPHSAA-endorsed sports to be high risk: basketball, boys lacrosse, competitive cheerleading, football, ice hockey, volleyball, and wrestling.

Sign ups for high risk sports including basketball, wrestling and competitive cheer are on hold until we receive authorization.

The Wasaren League has also made the difficult decision to not offer boys and girls indoor track this winter season. This is due to the fact that there are no sectional or state championships, no scheduled events at this time and no venues to hold indoor meets. Indoor track meets typically occur at HVCC, Union College and SUNY Albany and these colleges are not currently renting out space due to COVID-19. It has been decided by the league that an indoor track honor system program is not feasible at this time.

We will keep families updated as we learn more information. Please reach out to Athletic Director Mike Kinney at mkinney@scsd.org if you have any questions.
