Update on the coronavirus and school events/activities – Friday, March 13

This is an update on the coronavirus situation and how it is impacting the Stillwater Central School District. Although there are no confirmed cases of the virus in Stillwater, we feel it is imperative to implement proactive steps that could help us keep our schools open and continue to educate our students. As of right now, our plan is to continue with the regular school day and regularly scheduled after school activities.

However, in an effort to reduce the instances of community contact at our schools, and protect students and staff, we have suspended most travel, community use of our facilities, outside visitors to our campus (i.e., college visits, parent volunteers, etc.) and have postponed all large group events until further notice.

This measure also includes the use of the fitness center, Stillwater Steppers, etc. (A list of many of the affected events is below.) Middle and high school clubs, activities, and extra help sessions that occur during the after school activity period will still take place. We will continue to offer our late bus run for high school and middle school students.

At this time, all school-related athletic practices will be cancelled until Tuesday, March 17. In addition, Section 2 has suspended all games, contests, and scrimmages until April 19.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation and make a decision about whether or not it’s necessary to extend these preventive measures beyond April 20. Please check our website for updates.

As of right now, the following calendar events have been cancelled or postponed. Dates for postponed events will be made available at a later time.

  • March 13: Glow Dance for grades K-2 – postponed
  • March 16: Sky Zone for French Club – cancelled
  • March 17 & 19: 9th & 10th grade PTech visits – cancelled
  • March 20: Universal Pre-K registration – postponed
  • March 20: Glow Dance for grades 3-5 – postponed
  • March 23: 8th to 9th Grade Transition Night – postponed
  • March 26-28: High School Drama Production – postponed
  • March 30: Disney parent info night – postponed
  • April 2: College & Career Fair – cancelled

Furthermore, because outside use of our facilities has been halted there are many other activities that have been cancelled, such as community youth sports, outside athletic tournaments, etc. Please check with the organizers of each of these events for further guidance.

Planning for a Possible Closure

While there is no change to the school schedule at this time, schools have been asked to prepare for the possibility of closures to prevent the spread of this illness. In the event that school is closed, it is important to acknowledge that there are practical limits to instructional program continuity. Instead, our commitment will be to sharing a variety of resources for parent-guided and self-guided learning for students. This will include links and resources that will allow students to practice skills, review content and explore topics at home.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and cooperation during this time. We are doing our best to provide as much information as possible in light of this rapidly evolving situation. Please keep checking your email and the district website. We will continue to provide updates as we have more information.
